We have a 8 ft wide wooden gate on our privacy fence, and of course, its sagging. We tried to put a
cable - turnbuckle - cable with a eye hook at the top of a 4x4 square post
on the fence and one at the bottom outside of the gate to keep it level
but when we try to open the gate all the way it pulls free or it comes
loose from the eyebolt thing. A wheel on the gate is out of the question.
is there anyway to fix it so the gate wont sag overtime?
My suggestion would be to cut the gate into 2 4 ft sections and
then hang it from both sides Not only will it take less room to open it it
will take the weight off of the whole gate.
First you need to determine if the gate itself is sagging or if
the hinges are coming loose or bending. If the vertical boards of the gate
are not square with the horizontal boards, then the gate is too large for
the way it is designed. My general rule of thumb is that any door/gate
should not be any wider than it is tall. You can not put enough hinges on
it to support the stress. Hold a gallon of milk against ur body, then hold
it away from ur body. Same effect. I would need to know how the gate is constructed in order to give you a clearer answer.
It sounds like it is too much weight for the existing hinges,
you may want to add a hinge and re-secure the ones that are existing. The
cable and turnbuckle will only keep the gate itself square. Run the cable
and eye bolts from corner to corner on the gate, not the 4X4.
